HPP Mavčiče lies in the valley of the Sava River downstream of Kranj, near the village of Mavčiče. It is a run-of-the-river plant with a concrete gravity dam structure. The reservoir enables daily water accumulation to cover peak demand for electricity. Once the full chain of HPPs on the Sava is built, the reservoir will take on the role of a head pond.

The plant is part of the chain of hydroelectric power plants on the Sava River and houses the control centre for all hydroelectric power plants on the Sava, as well as the maintenance centre for the upper and middle Sava chain. HPP Medvode is located above the confluence of the Sava and Sora rivers, near the village of Medvode. The rise in the water level formed Zbilje Lake at this location.

HPP Vrhovo lies on the plain below the village of Vrhovo and is the first in the chain of hydroelectric power plants on the lower Sava. The dam structure is of the concrete gravity type, with a structural height of 27 m. The plant operates in a daily run-of-the-river regime with a reservoir that serves as the head pond for the lower Sava chain. Once the full chain of HPPs on the Sava is completed, the reservoir will take on the role of an intermediate equalising basin.

HPP Moste has operated as the first power plant on the Sava River since 1952. The dam is a concrete arch-gravity structure located in the narrowest part of the Sava canyon, in the Kavčke gorge below Žirovnica. At 60 m, it is also the highest dam in Slovenia. The reservoir enables weekly equalisation of flows.
